Function

The piston is one of the basic parts of hydraulic hammers. It is driven by the hydraulic oil (of the excavator) pressure difference that appears below and above the piston working surfaces. Constant pressure on different surfaces results in different forces whereby the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy and the piston gets an acceleration downwards - towards the working tool to which it transmits the kinetic energy. With gas/oil hammers that have gas in the back head, up to 70% of the impact energy comes from the accumulated gas energy in the back head.

The pistons are one of the most loaded parts of the hammer. The impact forces of the piston into the tool can reach several hundred tons. The tolerances between the piston and the cylinder are very small and amount to only a several hundredths of a millimeter. The working pressure of the oil is from 100-200 bar, and the pistons in one minute hit the tool from several hundred to several thousand times per minute..

Maintenance

The maintenance of the piston itself is secondary. Because damage to the piston can lead to high repair costs and sometimes to unprofitable hammer repairs, it is especially important to keep the primary elements in good condition..

Maintenance of primary elements on the excavator

Hydraulic excavator oil of correct viscosity and purity, correct connecting elements of hydraulic installation of excavator, correct adjustment of hydraulic pumps of excavator, correct working temperature of hydraulic oil of excavator.

Maintenance of primary elements on the hammer

Regular replacement of bushings, regular replacement of working tools and tool retainers, regular cleaning of tool bushings, avoidance of excessive lubrication of bushings, regular replacement of seals, regular inspection and replacement of tie rods, regular inspection of the lower part of the hammer with removal of working tool, piston impact area inspection, for working underwater and in tunnels strictly adhering to the manufacturer's instructions.
